How We Built a $9 Million/Year Cleaning Business from a $20k Start, Without VC Funding
In the fast-paced world of startups, speed often translates to success. The ability to raise capital quickly, attract talent, acquire users, expand into new markets, and secure further funding are commonly treated as core performance indicators. At MyClean, we chose a different path: no venture capital, outsourced development, and a business model sustained by exceptional customer service and word-of-mouth. It’s not the route most modern startups pursue, but it’s what worked for us.
Launching a cleaning company in late 2009 without prior technology or entrepreneurship experience was a formidable challenge. We hired developers one after another, searched for the right fit, and began with zero full-time employees—just me and a phone. Yet three assets carried us through: heart, hustle, and vision.
Early on, we experimented with an “Uber for Cleaning” concept. Relying on outsourced cleaners quickly led to quality control problems, negative Yelp reviews, and scalability issues. We needed to pivot fast. Guided by a commitment to the highest levels of customer and employee satisfaction, we transitioned our cleaners from independent contractors (1099) to full-time W-2 employees. Today, our cleaners are fully trained to meet MyClean’s 50-Point Checklist and receive benefits such as health insurance, paid sick leave, workers’ compensation, and 401(k) options. Prioritizing our team’s well-being ultimately serves our customers, even if it means prices run 10%–20% higher than some competitors who contract their cleaners.
Since that shift, MyClean has grown from a one-person operation living in a tiny apartment to a business generating $9 million annually, with more than 200 cleaners and 20 office staff. We have completed over 375,000 home and office cleans since inception and average more than 2,000 cleans per week across New York City and Chicago.
Over eight years, we’ve endured ups and downs, watched competitors—some backed by tens of millions in funding—rise and fall, and implemented processes that were sometimes more elaborate than necessary. Yet today, we’re prouder of our journey than ever, optimistic about the future, and confident in a simple philosophy: slow and steady wins the race.
Key Lessons Learned
-
Target a market with proven demand. Before launching MyClean, some team members observed a consistent, long-term need—neighbors with trusted cleaning services, shared routines, and the opportunity for a more efficient model. Recognizing that demand and addressing real pain points laid a strong foundation.
-
Stay true to your core vision, but be willing to pivot. Our initial plan aimed to build a technology-driven platform for booking, paying, and communicating online. Customer feedback revealed that actual service quality needed improvement. We pivoted to a model that hires, trains, and manages its own cleaners, delivering a superior, reliable service.
-
Trust your instincts about capital and growth. The “Uber for X” trend swept through home services around 2012, and several competitors secured substantial VC funding. We received frequent inquiries from investors, yet the equity-driven “scale” mindset and the quality-control challenges we faced suggested a different path. We chose not to pursue venture funding, prioritizing sustainable growth aligned with our values and capabilities.
-
Put people first. It may seem simple, but many leaders overlook this. MyClean’s mission centers on creating and maintaining happy homes for clients while building sustainable careers for team members. Every decision keeps the best interests of employees and customers at the forefront.
What’s Next?
Continuing our counter-cultural spirit, we recently refreshed our website with an anti-surge pricing model. The mobile-friendly site hosts a dynamic pricing engine that offers discounts for bookings on slower days and times. This approach delivers greater value to customers who are flexible with their schedules, while continuing to provide strong, sustainable opportunities for our team. We remain dedicated to delivering exceptional value to clients and maintaining rewarding careers for our staff.
